ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND NEAR MISS MANAGEMENT

Preventing accidents is one of the greatest challenges that companies face every day. How does a company prevent accidents?.. by knowing where accidents are likely to happen and implementing controls that reduce the likeliness of a given accident from happening.

How does a company know where accidents are likely to happen?.. by examining on a routine basis accident records and identifying the trends that will present themselves 80 percent of the time. Companies can also examine the jobs and their corresponding tasks that are performed by workers and isolating the ones that pose the greatest risks.Assuming a company has identified high risk job tasks how does it prevent an accident ?.. by implementing controls. Controls are usually categorized as engineering, administrative, work practice or personal protective equipment. A seatbelt is an example of an engineering control. A company policy that requires workers to use them is administrative.

Creating a safety culture is at the heart of the matter. If workers are kept informed and trained regularly they feel empowered. Encourage workers to look out for each other as if they were members of a team.
